Building of Infrastructure, Schools and a Hospital Ward in Villa El Salvador and Huaycan

(19.06.2011)

Report by Manfred Görgens:

Both, Villa El Salvador and Huaycan, are satellite towns of the capital Lima. They are marked by a tremendous sadness, violence, terror and prostitution. You start to believe that hell is on earth and that there is not such a thing as paradise.

'Villa El Salvador'

In March this year the first contact was made to a women's initiative which was founded by Maria Elena Moyano. Maria Elena Moyano was brutally murdered by terrorists of the 'Bright Path' (Sendoro Luminoso) when she was a young woman and mother at the age of 35 at a children's festival in 1992. The fusillades of the machine guns did not kill her immediately, so the terrorists forced Maria Elena Moyano's children to blow her dying mother up with dynamite. Her remains fitted into a shoe box.

At this time I have been in Lima as well and we were all shocked. On the next day hundred thousands of people went into the streets, demonstrated and marked the beginning of a change which has silenced terror in Peru.

The younger sister of Maria Elena Moyano, Martha Moyano, continues to lead her sister's soup kitchen. She has become a dear friend of ours. The women's initiative of Villa El Salvador, which has approximately 380.000 inhabitants, keeps about 200 soup kitchen. Every soup kitchen gives out between 180 and 250 square meals for children and needy persons on a daily basis for a price of converted fifteen Euro cent.

In the next time we will support this project and we will use your donation for it. It is worthwhile even for us here in the western civilisation to make possible a life in dignity for the poorest of the poor, so they can survive in their homeland.

About Huaycan:

This district is two hours away from Lima and lies already in the Andes. It came into being about ten years ago and is as old as the Peru-Aid itself. It is called a Pueblo Jovenes (a young village) and it increases rapidly as a consequence of the migration into cities. The population of Huaycan increased from 0 to 80.000 inhabitants in ten years.

When I was there in this year's spring the young major told me that they now have around 110.000 inhabitants. Only a few streets are supplied with electricity. Not to mention running water and a system for sewage.

Two former fire engines of ours transport purified water for low prices to households which have primitive tanks in front of theirs. Five or six years ago Huaycan has been the first address for terrorists outside of Lima. No military forces or the police were able to enter it. The chance of survival was zero. In this catastrophical circumstances terror, violence and prostitution does not stay far away. A mother sells her body to earn the money for a meal, so her family can survive.

The only one who as if by a miracle was allowed to enter Huaycan was our friend Adriano Tomassi, who founded the oasis Villa Asis not far away. Today he builts a training school in Huaycan. We support him in this effort.

This project has not been finished and needs further support.
